Big City Forum: The Club House
Re: Books, sigils, charms, affirmations, etc!!!
. . .
Signify, Sanctify, Believe (SSB) is invested in the playful exploration of real and imagined belief systems. Facilitated by Claire Cronin, Adam Overton, and Tanya Rubbak, SSB features the visionary gifts of dozens of contemporary artists and performers.
The Library of Sacred Technologies (LoST) is an ephemeral cabinet of wonders and a publishing imprint of Signify, Sanctify, Believe. The LoST collection consists of dozens of found and newly-created publications, and presents works of playful semi-secular invention by artists, performers and writers from Los Angeles.
LoST.v1 Artists: Albert Ortega, Adam Overton, Amanda Yates, Amina Cain, Anna Mayer, Claire Cronin, Danielle Adair, Guan Rong, Holly Myers, James Klopfleisch, Jen Bruce, John Burtle, Jonathan Butt, Marc Herbst, Marcos Siref, Margaret Wappler, Mathew Timmons Matias Viegener,Nisa Schoonhoven, Oona Gardner, Robert Cheatham, Sascha Goldhor, Sean Dockray, Stephen van Dyck, Teresa Carmody, Vera Brunner-Sun.
. . .
Tanya Rubbak works in collaborative settings, focusing on publications and other printed and digital matter that lives in spaces between graphic design, performance, and authorship. She’s interested in the inherently messy and esoteric process of giving form and systematic representation to ideas and other intangible things.
. . .
Big City Forum: The Club House
A modular exhibition and lab for ideas that encourage cross-disciplinary explorations and exchanges focused around the idea of maximum change.
At this moment of social and civic transformation in the public space and within a current moment steeped in uncertainty, how do we generate it, ensure it, and give it agency?

Invoking LA, curated by Ben Maltz Gallery Curatorial Fellow Paige Tighe
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 30, 4-6pm
Invoking LA, curated by artist Paige Tighe, (‘10 Otis MFA Public Practice) presents the work of seven artists who use the fast-cut editing techniques and formats of reality TV shows, commercials, and music videos in an effort to summon the divine. The editing techniques aid in creating a sort of trance-like space, in which sound, color, and action become shamanistic acts, such as: chanting prayers, priestess dances, and rituals of undetermined origin.
Artists: Raul Paulino Baltazar (’09 OTIS Fine Arts, ’13 MFA Public Practice), Michael-Vincent Garcia (’10 OTIS Fine Arts), Mark X Farina, Bridget Kane (’12 OTIS MFA Fine Arts), Elena Rosa (’12 OTIS MFA Fine Arts), Signify, Sanctify, Believe: Claire Cronin, Adam Overton, and Tanya Rubbak, and Niko Solorio

He saved my life the other day.
He has my best interest at heart, and probably yours.
Wait... you didn’t answer my question.
The Coracle is relentless. Its contrary magic derives from patiently waiting, finding and preserving moments of serenity and infectious harmony, then skeptically smashing such symmetry as soon as it gets a whiff of any magical complacency. It swears against mythology's illusions and desires a blunter Now: honest, bare and pre-teen. It "says" what most are afraid to "say" with a seriousness commingled with humor, wrapped so subtly that the two are often confused; It speaks its mind [seemingly] regardless of context, reveling in the uncomfortable adrenaline glow of a conversation paralyzed from Its uttering that one unspeakable Word. The Coracle rejects any flirtation with easy answers or excuses, presenting instead a matrix of objection, counter-argument, and expert witness. It serves up a stiff cocktail of warm embrace and razor-lipped critique, confusing Its subjective reality for our objective one. "Here, eat this," says The Coracle's stare. “I mean... they’re not the worst shoes I’ve ever seen," says Its furrowed brow. And yet Its exacting poignancy keeps us codependent compatriots coming back again and again for the splendors of spiritual make-up sex. The Coracle takes its appointment too seriously, too anti-heroically, and looks us deep in the eyes expecting the same from us. We desire Its attention, Its bashful grin, Its ecliptic non sequiturs, Its parallel universe where we-know-better-than-that.

Is there another perspective of reality underlying the life of daily experience? Does it matter if it actually exists? Are there particular words or images that can describe it?
We at the Church of the Red Marble believe that we can perceive this layer if we choose, regardless of its existence or the various symbols that describe it. We believe in the power of ritual and believe that we are empowered to invent rituals, symbols, music, and other actions that can connect us to the underlying reality.
We invite you join us in our red marble ritual. We would like to sing for you and maybe even with you, and share our thoughts about metaphors of shape. At this service we will focus on the hidden origin of religious symbols and how their meanings paradoxically crystallize and bend in time.
We study and practice the invention of rituals, the relationship of nature words to religious words, the use of shape metaphors to illustrate social phenomena, and the power of music to transcend the individual experience.

Return to me with all your heart - with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning
Our Friday evening service, taking place on April 22nd, the day that the Christian church commemorates Jesus’ brutal death on the cross, will include a series of sermons from our humble ministers, the sad music of Saint Bruce, the melody of tears, cathartic ritual, and other sorrowful delights. All are welcome to attend.
The Church of Despair honors sadness as an ever-present current in our lives, and sees this emotional state as the bedrock of all spiritual practice. In an age of blind optimism and aggressive positive thinking, The Church of Despair is a place where the darker and softer elements of human experience are embraced rather than dismissed. We teach the use of despair (and its corollary practices of grief, crying, disappointment, and hopelessness) as a powerful tool for deepening one’s connection with Spirit. We practice letting our hearts be broken, again and again, by the suffering of this world, as a way to feel sadness in solidarity with others.

in the city, on a nature covered in asphalt we in our every-days move from place to place, believing we know these places as part of a certain order. by s l o w i n g down, looking at our hands and the leaves, the light and the soil, we will enter a space of pure knowing, of a moment.
participants will channel sensory energies into a physical form, the map, the gift to the known world. we will work ourselves into micro-trance states by spending time in the timeless natural of elyria canyon park. this experience will then be translated into drawings, maps and shared with the group
The shakers made gift drawings as a way to channel energies from the spiritual world, to document the para-present; to augment the everyday with a metaphysical, a mysterious, a sense of wonder.
we believe in the ineffable, the colors and the properties of colors that course through our brains, our veins at all times. we strive to make the invisible visible, to represent the specificities of a moment, to bring an individual to a present using the idea of the map as a tool to guide these meditations into a form.

Since 1955, The Los Angeles Meditation Ghostwriters Guild (LAMGG) has been the world's leading one-stop shop for all your meditation authoring and consultation needs!! Our mission is to help spiritual facilitators maximize their potential as inspirational and succinct guides into the transcendent zones of radical love and inner wisdom! Let's face it – most of us are human, and great healers don't live in remote mountain monasteries anymore, delivering precious herbs and the occasional aphorism to the nearby village every full moon! You're busy helping a new and frantic world traverse psychic dilemma and avert spiritual catastrophe via daily seminars, hourly in-store appearances, and minute-to-minute social media updates! With an increasingly voracious public beckoning you, and barely any time left for your own self-maintenance, how could anyone expect you or any other great healer to have the time necessary to invent the next great sutra! Hold on – take a deep breath. The Los Angeles Meditation Ghostwriters Guild has been turning desperation into inspiration for over 50 years, and is ready to help you glow again.
the experimental meditation center of los angeles (emcla) is a frame[work], a magic circle, a safe space, a temporary autonomous zone, a performance space, ... for the facilitation of artist-led meditations. our definition of meditation is loose, areligious, and open to many gentle forms. in fact, we believe that the notion of "experimental meditation" is redundant, in that all meditation is an experiment in shifting our perceptions. the experimental meditation center of los angeles has no center, but generally meets with small groups around los angeles.

Tanya Rubbak and Stephen van Dyck, officiators of tonight’s AutoSanctification Bureau, invite you to a join our writing seance devoted to exploring intuitive forms of channeling, divination, and bibliomancy. Come get in touch with a nearby benevolent light being, the source of all wisdom, your long lost pet rat, or any other entity that resides in a faraway space or right below the bubbly surface of your consciousness. We will dive into our sublime waters, the mindbodyspacetime continuum of deeply personal configurations located at the threshold of language, that guide our daily actions, thoughts and feelings. The answers are at your fingertips – write, draw, doodle, make up, make believe and listen for the words and sounds from beyond. In addition, Corey Fogel will cast precarious and delicate sound bridges to help catalyze and stimulate our psychic travels.
The AutoSanctification Bureau is committed to stream of consciousness writing as a way to solve ALL our problems, to intuit ourselves into higher dimensions, and to engage in associative linguistic journeying within the deep and personal waters of our being. AutoSanctification is a highly effective and superpleasurable method of interrogating your own cosmic consciousness and the consciousness of the cosmos. We host workshops, seances, magic writing circles, and experimental meditations to help you develop your secret autointuitive skills.

We cannot be colonizers because everyone is already here, and no one wants to be colonized. But we absolutely are explorers because none of us know where we are. As messengers, shamans, and artists, we must document the territories of consciousness. We must explore the infinite. Today, we will explore the terrain of the ever-changing realms of being. When we return from our sojourn we will help others to know, and how to survive in this mysterious and beautiful landscape. Step 1: You fall. It's safe. Look around. Map it so that others can follow you.
Today's practice will be in exploring the first of the infinite 365 realms of consciousness. We will enter the first state of consciousness through a trance induced by the Priestess of the Shifting Realms. We will encounter guides, dangers, celebrations, animals, sublime landscapes and machines. When we return we will be creating a map of the terrain and joining it with other maps of the infinite interior. Next time we go, it will be easy for us to find the door to Realm 2.
We are explorers of the 365 realms. We are the initiated who travel between the worlds. Like the early telephone operators, we connect lines of communication. We are servants and lovers of The Mystery.
Life itself is The Mystery.
Some say there is no such thing as magic, and others want to see it but can't or don't. We are here to help the blind to see. It's easy. Nothing is hidden.

During our 1-2 hour seminars we (Hannah and Gabriel) will offer group movement rituals and public, 1-to-1 healing sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to speak with us about challenges arising in their lives and, through a combination of conversation and techniques for embodiment of Source Energy, move beyond those challenges into flow with Life Force.
Hannah Henderson was brought into alignment with the Angel Gabriel in 1986 after awakening during a Jazzercise class with her spiritual partner and medium, Fontina. In 1990 Hannah/Gabriel and Fontina began leading seminars and collective, ritual embodiments of Source Energy. These seminars, entitled tttatattttabatattttwattinattatwbacslf (the thinker thinks a thought, and then the thought thinks and becomes a thinker, and then the thought, that was a thought that is now a thinker, thinks another thought, which becomes a constant summoning of life force), aim to guide human life forms into optimal flow with the Now.

It is said we spend a third of our lives in the enduring state of sleep. But what does it all mean? The way we rest our bodies has as much to do with our habits as it does our natural dispositions. If you would like to experience sleep in a new way (or the same old way in a new place), please rsvp to alexisdisselkoen@mac.com by Wednesday April 27. Please bring a pillow and a blanket. We also seek to educate interested parties in the creation of sigils as well as in the use of traditional Asatru runes. Recommendations for further reading and work sheets will also be provided.
We seek to share and gain knowledge about various occult traditions. We are not ourselves experts but would like to learn more and share what we know.

WE ARE TRANSMITTERS
Please plan to arrive early by around 7:00 pm for a warm-ups and libations.
Due to this happening’s participatory nature, there will be no admittance after 7:38 pm.
WE ARE TRANSMITTERS IS HOW WE WILL COMMUNICATE WITH ONE ANOTHER IN THE FUTURE, NOW, FROM THIS POINT ON. WITHOUT USING ANY COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY, PEOPLE WILL CONTACT AND VISIT EACH OTHER THROUGH PURELY MAGICAL, SPIRITUAL, AND/OR PSYCHIC MEANS. WE WILL EXIST IN TWO PLACES AT ONCE. WE WILL LOVE EACH OTHER AND THEN DRIFT BACK INTO THE NIGHT. JOIN US ON MAY DAY FOR A FORRAY INTO POST-SILICON-BASED NETWORKS THAT WILL GALVANIZE THE NEXT REVOLUTION FOR HUMANITY.
HERE’S HOW IT WILL WORK: ON SUNDAY, MAY 1ST, 2011, EEC FIELD AGENT TOM MCKENZIE WILL LEAD A GROUP OF WILLING SOULS IN A CEREMONY AT THE HEADQUARTERS FOR SIGNIFY, SANCTIFY, BELIEVE. MEANWHILE, AT THE LOST HORSE RANGER STATION AT JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK, FIELD AGENT STEVEN L. ANDERSON WILL UNDERTAKE A SIMULTANEOUS CEREMONY. WITHOUT THE USE OF PHONE, INTERNET, CAR, ETC., THE TWO PARTIES WILL, AT THE CLIMAX OF THE CEREMONIES, TRAVEL ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS AND THE DESERT AND JOIN EACH OTHER IN BOTH PLACES AT THE SAME TIME.
AT THE SSB HQ AS THE SUN SLIPS BEHIND THE HILLS, A SAGE SMUDGE WILL BE LIT AND MUSIC WILL START TO SIGNAL THE BEGINNING OF THE EVENT. TOM WILL LEAD THE PARTY IN SOME SOCIAL AND PHYSICAL EXERCISES, SO THAT PEOPLE GET A FEEL FOR ONE ANOTHER, LOOSEN UP AND SHED THEIR RESERVATIONS. AT JOSHUA TREE, STEVE WILL BE SIMULTANEOUSLY GOING ABOUT SIMILAR ACTIVITIES. THE MUSIC—CONSISTING OF COLLAGED BELL, GONG AND DRUM SOUNDS WITH SAMPLED “SPIRITUAL” MUSIC—WILL CUE VARIOUS PHASES OF THE PERFORMATIVE SCORE. AS THE SOUND SHIFTS TO SETS OF RHYTHMIC LOOPS EMANATING IN AND OUT-OF-PHASE, BOTH PARTIES WILL VOICE A MANTRA TO THE RHYTHM, WHICH WILL BECOME A FRENZIED CHANT AS THE TELEPATHIC PORTAL OPENS ON WHICH THE PARTIES WILL TELEPATHICALLY EMBARK ON A VISUALIZATION OF FLIGHT OVER THE CITY, THE MOUNTAINS, AND THE DESERT; TO THE RANGER STATION AND TO THE FREE CHURCH OF PUBLIC FICTION. THE HAPPENING PARTICIPANTS WILL ENGAGE IN GROUP MOVEMENT AND THEN JUMP UP TO THEIR FEET AND BOUNCE AROUND IN PLACE, THEN RUN IN CIRCLES TOGETHER AROUND THE CEREMONIAL SPACE. AS THE CEREMONIES REACH THEIR CLIMAX, THE RHYTHM WILL END IN AN EXPLOSION OF SOUND AND ECHOES THAT BLISSES OUT IN A SHOWER OF AURAL SPARKS. IN THE FOLLOWING SILENCE, BOTH PARTIES WILL SHOUT OUT THE MESSAGE OF THE HOUR. AFTERWHICH, WE WILL CELEBRATE, THEN SAY GOODBYE, OVER AND OUT. THIS WILL CONCLUDE THE CEREMONY.
AS A SPIRITUAL/PSYCHEDELIC EXERCISE, WE ARE TRANSMITTERS WILL HELP US ALL COME IN TUNE WITH ONE ANOTHER, NO MATTER WHERE WE ARE. BUT THIS MAGIC CAN, WITH THE SAME GOAL, HAVE A MORE PRACTICAL EFFECT. THE WORLDWIDE REVOLUTIONARY EVENTS OF 2011 MAY HAVE BEEN INITIATED THROUGH FACEBOOK AND TWITTER, BUT WE HAVE SEEN HOW EASILY THOSE IN POWER CAN SHUT OFF THIS KIND OF COMMUNICATION. BUT AS THE D.H. LAWRENCE POEM SAYS, “AS WE LIVE, WE ARE TRANSMITTERS OF LIFE.” AND THIS CHANNEL CANNOT BE CHANGED OR TURNED OFF QUITE AS EASILY.
THE CEREMONIES AT EACH SITE WILL BE VIDEOTAPED. AT THE SSB HEADQUARTERS THERE WILL BE ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTATION IN THE FORM OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND LIVE TWEETS.

The Pursuit of Righteousness, 2009, 1:09:00
Acting on their belief that humanity needs a religion based on science, a father and his sons work full-time on creating an ideology and attracting recruits. They inspire some converts, but as the effort is derailed by family dynamics, they learn a powerful lesson about the limits of their relationships.

How to See Auras, 2008, 8:40
Filmed at an Edgar Cayce conference in the Howard Johnson Hotel in Miami, Florida, How to See Auras documents pharmacist and aura observer, Ava, guide a class of over 30 students through step-by-step exercises. After a ten-minute practice, students share their visions with the class. Similar to the relationship between a viewer and an art object, each aura observer sees something different in Ava's energy field. The room oscillates between belief and skepticism.

Born Again, 2010, 5:00
One of the most popular pastimes in Auraville, a self described city of the future in South India, is a form of body massage called Watsu. Immersed in body temperature water, the receiver floats on and under the surface of water through a series of gentle choreographed steps and improvisations. The giver’s movements are similar to Tai Chi. The surrender required of the receiver re-creates the feeling of re-entrance into the womb. As the receiver surrenders, the body requires less oxygen, allowing them to be brought under water for longer and longer times. Watsu was developed in Northern California.

Over the course of a 30-minute conversation we hope to make a palpable crucial shift in our relationship as artists and friends, encompassing and personifying the gap between ourselves as audience members and performers. By deliberately bringing this perceived dichotomy upon ourselves in the character of our performance we will reformat the necessary ritual to allocate the blind spot we anticipate in the gaze of the audience, negating the eye of the congregation by caricaturizing the role of the viewer ourselves as non observers in the performance. In doing this we claim a restructuring of our standard methods of reliance as artists upon audience in order to reveal an intrinsic connection between observer and observed simultaneously acting as and defining one another.
In Aztec mythology, the Great Pole, or North Star, was considered a place sacred to the gods. Tezcatlipoca, the god which embodied change through conflict, sought to enter this place but, unable to approach it, hopped around its point on his single foot, creating the Great Bear Constellation. We believe that there is an insurmountable blind spot, a black hole which, ever present, remains at the core of our work. Like the constellation formed by the gesture of Tezactlipoca's lack, we trace the defining significance of the unachieved. Our power lies in the inconsistencies of subjectivity- the blind spot is identified and redefined in the course of our parallaxial gait about its center. In this action we come to paradoxically portray the unfathomable itself- here arrives a possibility to become our very blind spot.

Revel in the moment, meditate on the nowness, and celebrate the infinite unfolding of the being of apocalypse. In this final broadcast from the church of public fiction, RADIO L'GALÓT will provide a pure pathway through the seeming end-time predicated onto our experience of the now. Through collapse we will journey into the blessed domain of the apparent ending of the church of public fiction.
Broadcasting from undisclosed and ever rotating locations, Radio L'galót seeks to educate and inform those who are willing and ready to listen. The three pillars of our organization are Preparedness, Contingency, and Spirit. Through these pillars we seek to reveal the fundamental dangers of a society structured on the hopes for end-time and instead to revel in the abject chaos of the now-time.
